CARNARVON GORGE CAMPING AREA

Public BBQ

A camping area at the mouth of Carnarvon Gorge and the base for one of the best walking networks in Queensland. Communal barbecue shelters are fully fitted out, with enormous tables that seat thirty, a hot water urn and 240-volt power; toilets are open around the clock and kept clean, though there are no showers and not all the barbecues work. There is a playground. The walks are the reason to come and they are long: the Big Bend return is around 24 kilometres over an easy gradient with seventeen creek crossings on stepping stones, and the finest sections are full-day outings, so come equipped. A pre-dawn climb to the eastern ridge for sunrise is worth the effort. Platypus forage in the creek at dusk for anyone patient and quiet enough. Storm damage has closed sections of track at times.
